A portrait session is ninety minutes with a camera and a day at a screen. A wedding is ten hours on your feet and thirty more culling and editing. What does it cost?

How do I handle a non refundable retainer?
State it on the quote before the client pays, record it when it arrives, and show it deducted on the final invoice. The reason it is defensible is that it buys a date you can no longer sell, and saying that in one sentence on the quote does more than any clause added afterwards.
Should the usage licence be on the invoice?
On commercial work, always. What the client may use the images for, where and for how long. It is the single most common commercial photography dispute, it costs one line, and an invoice that is silent on licensing is generally read as granting everything.
Can I invoice the balance before I deliver?
Yes, and it is the normal structure for a reason. Once the gallery is handed over, both the urgency and the leverage disappear. Set the due date before delivery on the quote so it is never a surprise at the end.
Does it handle contracts and model releases?
No. This is invoicing only. It produces quotes, invoices and receipts, and it records payments. Contracts, releases and gallery delivery stay in whatever tools you already use for them.
